Former Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit has slammed Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal’s transfer policy during the summer, Express reports.
The AC Milan legend has claimed that Van Gaal squandered a large chuck of his transfer funds on attacking players rather than solving the obvious defensive frailties that sees the Red Devils in 7th place only having picked up eight points from a possible 16.
Gullit complained, “How on earth is it possible that such an experienced and successful manager thought he could start the season at Man United without buying a couple of really strong central defenders?
“I am still amazed by his buying and his transfers. If you only strengthen the midfield and the attack, than you are underestimating the level and the power of the Premier League.
“If you want to survive in the top flight of English football, you start with the foundation and you build the roof of your house last. Van Gaal has done it the other way round.”
£16million summer signing Marcos Rojo was the only central defender available for selection in Man United’s fixture against West Ham United on Saturday, but the Red Devils did come out 2-1 winners in a closely fought game at Old Trafford.
Johnny Evans, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, and Tyler Blackett were all unavailable through injury or suspension, leaving the United defence in a fragile position throughout the encounter.
“Now matters are even worse because of all the injuries in his defence. He is having to fill one gap after another,” he added.
“And if you have so many injuries and you have not bought the defenders, then you are doing something wrong at your club.”
